I'm just a girl trying to do life as well as I can... This is my little corner of the internet where I like to share some of the current affairs that catch my eye. For an explanation of the inspiration behind the name, see the "Why Just a Girl?" Page. I tend to focus on law and order issues, and political issues. I'll be studying law and criminology from September, so expect even more of a trend in that direction between now and then. I do have a personal blog, but I like to keep it as anonymous as I can. Enjoy :)

Exactly the same love and commitment are possible between two people of the same sex as between two people of different sexes, and it is not immediately clear why the Church should regard such a relationship as ethically or spiritually inferior to a heterosexual marriage.

The fact that fifty years on [after the decriminalisation of homosexuality] the Church is seen as Enemy Number One of gay people is a disaster, both for our own morale and for our mission to the country. We have become the last refuge of prejudice.

Our world is facing problems - poverty, HIV and Aids - a devastating pandemic, and conflict. God must be weeping looking at some of the atrocities that we commit against one another. In the face of all of that, our Church, especially the Anglican Church, at this time is almost obsessed with questions of human sexuality.

It is a perversion if you say to me that a person chooses to be homosexual. You must be crazy to choose a way of life that exposes you to a kind of hatred. It’s like saying you choose to be black in a race-infected society.

If God, as they say, is homophobic, I wouldn’t worship that God.

the Most Reverend Desmond Tutu, retired Archbishop of South Africa

Undercover Nun is with you, Abp. Tutu.  If God would condemn even one person to hell because they were born with gender or orientation that doesn’t quite fit cultural norms, well, then I would choose not to worship that God.

Eight female state senators in Georgia walked out of the Senate chambers on Thursday to protest two bills that hinder access to abortion and contraceptives. All eight female democratic senators left the chambers together after two bills they oppose passed the Republican-led Senate. From Atlanta’s WXIA, the legislation:

  • Prohibits state employees from using state health benefits to pay for abortions
  • Does not allow employees of private religious institutions to demand that their insurance policies pay for contraceptives

“We stood together to protest what we feel is absolutely a war on women here in Georgia and we want to sound the alert to Georgians,” said Sen. Nan Orrick.

Republican state senator Joshua McKoon said of the legislation, “What I would say is the war that’s being waged is on a relative minority in this country that has strong beliefs that are protected by the First Amendment.”

The bills now heads to the House, whereboth are expected to pass.

The senators who walked out: Sen. Gloria ButlerSen. Gale Davenport, Sen. Nan Orrock, Sen. Freddie Powell SimsSen. Donzella James, Sen. Miriam Paris, Sen. Valencia Seay and Sen. Horacena Tate. Looks like I’ll be spending my Friday night emailing these senators to thank them for taking a stance on an incredibly important issue.

Anonymous asked: Are you a virgin?

Hello Anon. I’m sure a classy individual such as yourself understands why I would not want to publicise the answer to that question on the internet either way. Nor do I particularly want to clog up anyone’s dash with something that in no way affects their life. Hope you are well!

“Your time is limited, so don’t waste it living someone else’s life. Don’t be trapped by dogma - which is living with the results of other people’s thinking. Don’t let the noise of others’ opinions drown out your own inner voice. And most important, have the courage to follow your heart and intuition. They somehow already know what you truly want to become. Everything else is secondary.”

A funny depiction, but it speaks a painful truth- speaking from experience, the textbooks we have to buy for even first year courses present a huge expense to students.

This is what we need more of...

This is so uplifting to see. It is exactly the kind of thing I wish there was more of. I’m sure there are plenty of people, in any community, who would fail to see the use of this, or even find offence in it, but I disagree.

Reaching out like this is the best thing to do. The only way to find a path down which we can quash the unnecessary beating over of this one issue which divides the church, divides its people, and divides us from other communities.

Ordinarily, I would point out the obvious “flaw” in this scheme- the frustration over their refusal to “pick a side” as it were- but in this instance I will not. It is this very refusal which makes it so perfect- no one with faith could object to anyone reaching out to anyone else, and no one with my kind of view could accuse them of the standard failed plots to “cure” homosexuality or condemn those who are seen as different. It’s just…good.

Would I like to see them declare that being Gay is not wrong? Yes, of course I would. But as long as the scheme is uniting people, and as long as compassion is at it’s heart, I say carry on. This is how the church should operate. And to those who would rather lay back and judge? Sit up and take note- this is the church at it’s best.
